This exhibition is a tribute to Marco Antonio Cruz (1957–2021), one of the great documentary photographers of Mexico. Cruz dedicated 16 years to documenting the blind and visually impaired people in Mexico in his series Habitar la oscuridad (Inhabiting Darkness). By revealing the dignity of people living without sight, Cruz’s images demonstrate his concern for humanity and serve as testimony for social transformation. These photographs of the daily life of the blind—negotiating public spaces, making a living, going to school, receiving medical care—allow us to reflect upon our common bonds of compassion, friendship and loneliness. Also on view are images that highlight the trajectory of his career with an emphasis on his narrative photojournalism.
Included in this exhibition are images by Cruz’s mentors Héctor García, Nacho López and Mariana Yampolsky. Their guidance and friendship influenced his work and career. View their work alongside his in the small gallery adjoining this room.
Cruz directed the independent photo agency, Imagenlatina, for 17 years. In the second small gallery we feature documentary images of three photographers who worked with Cruz at Imagenlatina, including his wife, Ángeles Torrejón, Keith Dannemiller and Antonio Turok.

Esta exhibición es un homenaje a Marco Antonio Cruz (1957–2021), uno de los grandes fotógrafos documentales de México. Cruz dedicó 16 años a documentar a las personas en México que sufrían ceguera o deficiencias de la vista en su serie Habitar la oscuridad. Al revelar la dignidad de las personas que viven sin el sentido de la vista, las imágenes de Cruz demuestran su preocupación por la humanidad y sirven como testimonio de la transformación social. Estas fotografías de la vida cotidiana de los invidentes—negociando los espacios públicos, ganándose la vida, asistiendo la escuela, recibiendo atención médica— nos permiten reflexionar sobre nuestros enlaces comunes de compasión, de amistad y de soledad. También se exhiben imágenes que destacan la trayectoria de su carrera con un énfasis en su fotoperiodismo narrativo.
