TEXAS ON STAGE: The Drama Archives of the Southwestern Writers Collection
SOUTHWESTERN WRITERS COLLECTION

The archives of celebrated playwrights come to life in a new exhibit from the Southwestern Writers Collection at Southwest Texas State University.

Texas on Stage showcases the manuscripts, correspondence, playbills, artwork, and stage props associated with award-winning plays by Sam Shepard, Larry L. King, Preston Jones, Horton Foote, and many others.

The exhibit offers a backstage look at the making of several productions, including Larry L. King's Broadway smash The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Sam Shepard's Pulitzer Prize-winning Buried Child, and Preston Jones' classic A Texas Trilogy.

Texas on Stage also includes displays featuring Cormac McCarthy, William Hauptman, R.G. Vliet, Severo Perez, Ramsey Yelvington, Robert Flynn, Elithe Hamilton Kirkland, Mary Sue Jones, and Bud Shrake.

The exhibit expressly honors the work of legendary theater director Paul Baker, who along with his wife Kitty recently donated their stage archives to the Southwestern Writers Collection. Baker was the founding director of the Dallas Theater Center and a nationally renowned drama educator. A ceremony commemorating the Bakers' donation will be held at the Collection later this semester.

Texas on Stage: The Drama Archives of the Southwestern Writers Collection will be on exhibit through December 18. All of the material on display is part of the permanent collection of the Southwestern Writers Collection, a major archival repository focusing on literature, film, music and drama of the Southwest.
