Like lost stills from a personal filmscape, the photographs of Texas-born Rocky Schenck invite viewers to step into his surreal, shadowy territory: moments lit with a luminescence that is at once seductive and disconcerting. Schenck explains, "I consider my images to be illustrations of my conscious (and perhaps subconcscious) dreams, emotions, and longings." He was born in Austin and grew up in Dripping Springs, Texas, a self-taught camera artist who honed his skills by taking production stills on the sets of his own low-budget, experimental movies. Schenck now lives in Hollywood where he is a successful music video director and a commercial and fine-art photographer.

The Wittliff presents an intimate exhibition of his work in tribute to the 10th anniversary of his first book, Rocky Schenck Photographs, which is part of the Wittliff's Southwestern & Mexican Photography book series with the University of Texas Press. The Wittliff holds the major collection of his images: currently 157 photographs. Located on the first floor of the Alkek Library, this exhibition was curated by Kenneth Fontenot and Carla Ellard. Four additional photographs by Schenck are on view on the seventh floor in the Wittliff exhibition, México lindo, including a representative image from his new color series.
