Joe Holley is an award-winning author of several books, as well as a longtime journalist who was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2017. Holley served as editor of the Texas Observer and was a staff writer for the Washington Post. As an editorial columnist, he wrote the the popular "Native Texan" column for the Houston Chronicle. Holley also worked as a speechwriter for former Texas Governor Ann Richards.
His published books include Sutherland Springs: God, Guns, and Hope in a Texas Town, Hurricane Season: The Unforgettable Story of the Houston Astros and the Resilience of a City, Hometown Texas, Slingin' Sam: the Life and Times of the Greatest Quarterback to Ever Play the Game, and the novel, The Purse Bearer: A Novel of Love, Lust and Texas Politics.
He was born and raised in Waco and received his bachelor’s degree from Abilene Christian University and master’s degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and Columbia University.

Archival materials received from award winning Texas journalist and author Joe Holley dating 1964-2017. The bulk of the material consists of Holley’s notes, research, articles, editorials and columns written during his tenure as editor and contributor for The Texas Humanist, The Texas Observer, The San Antonio Light, San Antonio Express-News, The San Diego Tribune, Texas Coop Power and the Houston Chronicle (“Native Texan” column). Additional materials include edited speech drafts written for Governor Ann Richards and notes, drafts and research materials for pieces appearing in the Texas Monthly, Columbia Journalism Review, Southwest Review, Doubletake, Mexico Business, The Dallas Morning News, The Washington Post and The New York Times. Also included are research notes, press and drafts of Holley’s books Slingin’
Sam: The Life and Times of the Greatest Quarterback Ever to Play the Game, My Mother’s Keeper, The Purse Bearer: A Novel of Love, Lust and Texas Politics and The Hardy Boys as well as some of Holley’s college and graduate school notes and research papers.
